In 2018 I made a little series of pictures called ‘Paint the Town Red’ - portraits of Liverpool football fans who decorate their houses in extravagant style to support the team in the UEFA Champions League final.
The Guardian wanted to run the pictures but timing just didn’t work out with magazine deadlines.
“No problem”, I said, “we can just do it next year”.
I was only half joking.
Good as their word though, immediately after the extraordinary 2019 semi final victory over Barcelona they said they would like to run them and could I shoot some new ones to add?
Of course after the second amazing semi final, I called them first thing the next morning: “you’re going to want me to do Spurs too aren’t you?”, I said.
In an unapologetically partisan fashion, I’m only showing you the LFC pictures here, but thanks to the super team at The Guardian Weekend and in their spirit of balance (they were originally the Manchester Guardian of course!) they decided for the first time in the magazine’s history to make a double cover: one Liverpool, one Spurs ...I much prefer one to the other of course!
